Donner Lake Kitchen

Join Matt & Frankie (and Eliot) fias they uncover the charm of Donner Lake Kitchen in Truckee—home to buttery French toast, bunny pancakes, and mountain-town breakfast magic. A family-friendly favorite with 5 bacon stars!

First Impressions

Nestled just across from the shimmering waters of Donner Lake, this cozy spot exudes the charm of a classic breakfast joint. The moment we stepped in, we were greeted by a picturesque mural of a meadow and mountains, setting a serene tone for our meal. The ambiance whispered promises of hearty meals and warm memories.

What We Ate

Frankie: She indulged in French toast paired with sausage, complemented by a delightful hot chocolate adorned with animal cookies. The French toast was sweet, squishy, and buttery—earning high praise from our little foodie.

Eliot: Opted for the bunny rabbit pancake, complete with banana eyes and blue M&M pupils. He devoured it with gusto, leaving no trace behind.

Matt: Savored a chorizo, Ortega chili, and onion scramble, accompanied by crispy potatoes and sourdough bread. The potatoes were notably crunchy, adding a delightful texture to the meal.

Fun Menu Finds

The menu boasts some intriguing options, like the crab omelet, which piqued our curiosity. While the omelets here lean more towards scrambles, the flavors are robust and satisfying. It's the kind of place where even the unexpected becomes a pleasant surprise.

What Could Be Better

Service was a tad slow, likely due to our server being on her first day. However, her enthusiasm and friendliness more than made up for it. The open windows, while offering a refreshing breeze, did invite a few mosquitoes—a minor inconvenience in an otherwise delightful experience.

About the Restaurant

Established in the mid-1970s, Donner Lake Kitchen has been a staple in Truckee's dining scene. In the early '90s, the Money family took over, bringing their unique touch to the establishment. After a brief relocation to Sierraville in 2011 due to unforeseen circumstances, they triumphantly returned to their original location in 2014, much to the delight of loyal patrons.

Final Score

Would We Go Back? Absolutely! We're already planning our next visit, perhaps to explore their lunch offerings.
